Biblical Marriage is foundational to a stable and just society

marriage_delegation_canberra_feb_2010On Thursday 25th February I had the opportunity to join my national Australian Prayer Network Coordinator Brian Pickering and 47 other church and community leaders from across Australia, representing a Marriage Delegation in Canberra. We met with federal parliamentarians from both sides of the House, to present policies to strengthen marriage and congratulate them on their stand for the definition of marriage as in the Australian Marriage Act; "That marriage means the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life." The Marriage Delegation represented many Australians, indigenous and non-indigenous, who are passionate for the renewal of marriage and the restoration of family in Australia.

Our purpose was to meet with parliamentarians to present specific policies to support and strengthen Australian marriage. The Marriage Delegation presented the Marriage Manifesto as its foundational blueprint for the development of public policy by government, to strengthen and support marriage in Australia for the common good of all, especially Australia's children. We also presented a one-page policy brief that highlighted four key points to strengthen and support marriage.

At the time of our meeting in parliament, the Australian Greens' presented a private members bill in the Senate to legalise homosexual marriage - this was an amazing piece of timing, as we were, ‘on-sight to prayer with insight' and to stand together in unity on the Bible's definition of marriage. A recent Galaxy poll, November 2009, showed 86% of Australians still believe, that children are best raised by their own biological mother and father

Last Thursday we up held that right and we were on sight to witness a miracle. The miracle was in the timing and in the speedy defeat of the proposed homosexual marriage bill. Our prayers made history and made Hansard. Following the defeat of the bill, we were able to make an official statement that; The Marriage Delegation was pleased that the Government, Opposition and Family First confirmed their support of marriage between a man and a woman by the rejection of the Green's Bill.

Did you know: In a recent Australia Day, major newspaper Galaxy Poll, Australians were asked the question, "Do you think Australia has changed in the last 20 years?" The answer was surprising considering our nationalistic Australia Day euphoria. 52% said that Australia was worse. 39% said Australia was better and 9% of Australians had not noticed.

The Marriage Delegation therefore represented more than 52% of people in Australia who are deeply concerned by our increasing levels of family breakdown, high divorce rate, high rates of cohabitation without marriage, the declining status of marriage, higher rates of violence against women and children, rising rates of violence in the playground and general societal decay.

Our group therefore placed before the leaders of our nation, a plan of action to help stem the tide of this degradation in our society.
