Restoring the fire! Print E-mail
Tuesday, 17 May 2011 21:27

Over recent weeks I’ve been away on ministry with my Cross & Crescent team speaking about the Challenge of Islam in western societies and the how we, the church, need to respond. I’ve also been with our Australian Prayer Network national coordinator, speaking on ‘understanding God’s prophetic agenda across the world and in Australia today.’pic As I’ve travelled, I have been touched by what I’ve seen and heard from those who one might call a ‘remnant’ within the wider church. Those who are committed to see real change: life-transforming change, change that has both personal and societal significance.

Now in a previous bog the ‘Winds of Change’, I wrote that, “I believed that God is seeking to release a fresh anointing – a special grace of humility, compassion and the miraculous, that will see arise a new standard of kingdom authority, an authority that will have the power to silence the enemy at the gates of cities and territories, even nations. He will accomplish it – it has already started in some of the most difficult nations where the church has been systematically persecuted, He’s answering their cry for real freedom. It will be powerful; it will be magnificent; it will be wonderful and it will have the capacity to draw many to Christ as their Lord and Saviour.” During my recent trips, I’ve met brothers and sisters in Christ who are positioning themselves to catch this fresh new wind of God’s Spirit as it blows once again across nations.

In this article I want to reflect back to a passage of time in history that saw great spiritual change occur in the midst of real religious and socio-political turbulence. I have discovered that at times it is good to look back in order to look forward in relation to what God might do in us and through us. Therefore, I want us to consider those who we have come to know as the Moravians Believers, – Christian’s from Zinzendorf’s Moravian settlement at Herrnhut. Who through their humility, simplicity, prayer, mission and authentic life-style – key characteristics of this fresh outpouring, that I highlighted in my ‘Winds of Change’ article, once empowered them to become prayer focused, mission obedient world-changers.

The Moravian’s have had a significant impact upon my personal faith, theology and life-style, since coming to the Lord in the early 70’s. Prayer, the power of the Spirit and missions were written indelibly on the walls of my heart through reading and learning about these men and women of God. I would like here to briefly consider the fruit of the global awakening that has flowed for centuries into all areas of the church worldwide because of these faith-filled dedicated brothers and sisters. Consider the following three areas:

First, God honoring, loving relationships empowered them in their life, work and worship. They knew how to give sacrificially and how to honor one another in love and respect. Through such a lifestyle, they developed an accepting and forgiving spiritual community that shared with all-comers, in a compassionate and sacrificial way.

Second, the power of their sustained persistent praying, produced a godly passion and appetite for missional activity for the lost. Many of them sold themselves into slavery in South America just so they could carry the light of the Gospel into closed societies and cultures. The Moravians were the first missionaries to the plantation slaves at St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. They even went to strange out of the way places called, Lapland and Greenland, and to some parts of the African continent. The Moravian’s birthed an amazing missions movement; its effects are still felt even today.

Third, they had this motto that all in Herrnhut lived by, that, No one works unless someone prays. This took the form of a corporate commitment to sustained persistent prayer and ministry to the Lord. This kind of prayer went on unbroken 24/7: that is, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and it went on everyday for over 100 years. Some prayer meeting!

It has been said that, the Moravian’s 100 year plus prayer vigil and missionary exploits, marked one of the purest moves of the Holy Spirit in Church history; a movement that radically changed the expression of Christianity at that time. Many prayer and mission leaders today, feel that virtually every great missionary endeavor of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, regardless of denominational association, was in no small way, the fruit of the Moravian’s compassionate sacrificial service and sustained prayer.

Let me bring this to our doorstep.

God wants to renew His Spirit in all of us – this is a global phenomenon right now, because God is romancing His Church! As I wrote in the ‘Winds of Change’, it’s time to put aside every intimidation and every entanglement that seeks to restrain us; we must throw off the weight of conformity, even the spirit of unbelief and allow the Spirit to have full sway in our life, work and worship relationships. To be done with the shallow emaciated religion that is affecting large portions of the western church.

We need to be willing before God to lay aside things in our life for the sake of others. This is what is happening in many non-western nations - where there is incredible hostility and persecution against the church of Jesus Christ. In the midst of such difficulty they are experiencing a fresh new wind of the Holy Spirit, seeing both the miraculous and salvations in their midst.

God is restoring the ancient fire – the flames of Pentecost - that once inspired the early church, ordinary believers like the Moravians and many like them through the centuries. God is seeking a holy restoration. However, this restoration first starts with each of us! It’s about His Holy fire in us. The harvest sure is plentiful but the workers are few; prayer and then - go! (Lk. 10:2-3) That’s our call.

However the first step must be a renewal of the Holy Spirit which begins with the restoration of the fire on God's altar – us! Rom. 12:1… to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice…holy and acceptable... it’s our most reasonable service… (NIV)

Prayer and mission have always worked in cooperation – never independently.

In Acts 1:4, Jesus indicated to the disciples that they needed to pray then wait to receive the gift that His Father promised – The Holy Spirit. Then in verse 8 of the same chapter we read, ‘But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you’. What happens next? ‘…you will be my witness… unto the ends of the earth’. Therefore pray, and wait; receive the promise of the Spirit and go be my witnesses in all of life.

He’s a thought!

Have you ever thought that Jesus actually gave this command to 500 disciples, according to 1 Cor. 15:6. However, only 120 disciples actually obeyed this command Jesus gave in Acts 1:4. Whatever happened to the remaining 380 disciples? This calculates out to 76% or 3 out of 4 disciples who did something else. Is that not still the case today? Most of us know how important prayer and mission (sharing the good news about Jesus and the kingdom) is, but due to other things, we do not put into practice that which we know is important… sharing Christ and the message of the Gospel.

Friends, the more we behold Jesus in prayer, the more we will be changed (Phil 3:10-11) and the more the Lord of the harvest will release you and others like you, as labourers into the harvest (Matt. 9:37-38). Everyone has a harvest field they are connected to each and everyday. That’s where we need to sow; that’s where the kingdom of God is to be seen…prayer connects us to that reality.

The only solution Jesus ever gave for the problem of world evangelization was prayer and enthusiastic and willing workers. It’s never changed! Friend, we have the capacity to make a difference in our world through prayer and mission.

In your mission field (where you live, work and worship), how can you reduce the 76% figure and make a real difference in society and creation?

Friend, ‘…the harvest is plentiful…’

Which is it - joy or happiness? Print E-mail
Wednesday, 06 April 2011 11:40

real_joyI’ve been considering why is it that the enemy strives to attack our joy. And why is it that many of us get confused with the concepts of joy and happiness. For me real joy is an inward sense of peace, contentment and delight, due to our righteous standing in Christ. Knowing that we are sealed in the Holy Spirit for the day of redemption.

This state of joy should be present in the disciple of Jesus regardless of their circumstances or challenges they might be facing. Biblical joy is a supernatural experience that cannot be explained outside of a supernatural act of God and His wonderful grace. Reminds me of an old song that had a lyric in it that went like this, “…the world didn’t give us joy so the world can’t take it away….”

Jesus told His disciples that He spoke His words to them so that His joy would be in them and their joy would be full or complete (John 15:11). It was for this reason that Paul told us to ‘rejoice always’ (1 Thessalonians 5:16); even in his sorrow Paul was able to rejoice (2 Corinthians 6:10). The book of Nehemiah teaches us that, the joy of the Lord is our strength. (Nehemiah. 8:10) On the other hand, happiness is based on what ‘happens’ to us. Thus, it is merely an emotionally good feeling (which is a pretty alright feeling to have) when things go according to our desires. The fact that many Christians live their lives based on the pursuit of happiness instead of cultivating the joy of the Lord, in obedience to God and faith in the finished work Christ, is an indictment of the shallow theology that seems to be around today. This shallowness of teaching has succumbed to the worldly ideal that equates success with material prosperity, comfort, and the ability to live a life of ease.

As a minister of the gospel for almost 30 years, I’ve seen many Christians’ uproot their families, leave their church families and friends, and move to another place, region, state, sometimes even country, merely for economic gain or to escape some other external pressure, all without hearing from God first. Many I’m sure were more led by a belief system based on the pursuit of happiness rather than pursuing the mind of Christ for their God-given purpose. (I’ve seen many of the same people either fall away or never maximized their purpose and calling in Christ.) As a follower of Christ since my early twenties, I would say that maybe more than half of the things I am called to do are difficult or just mundane, often they are things that don’t make me happy necessarily. Things like paying close attention to details, endless meetings, conflict resolution, dealing with tragedies in families, financial challenges, persevering in the ministry in spite of discouragement, and, hardest of all, the continuing challenge of dying to self and putting on Christ instead of choosing immediate pleasures and taking the easy roads presented to me in life.

When Jesus told His disciples that He must suffer many things and spoke of His pending death and resurrection, Peter began to rebuke Jesus. (Perhaps Peter equated God’s will with happiness at this stage of his development in Christ – who knows?) Jesus’ response was so sharply opposed to Peter’s perspective that He called him Satan (Mark 8:31-33). Jesus then used this interface with Peter to teach His disciples that following God involves taking up their crosses. Following God involves suffering, not just happiness. Those who use happiness as the greatest gauge to tell if they are in the will of God or not, have totally missed it! The greatest gauge for a believer’s success in life is obedience to the revealed will of God, not fleeting emotional sensations that accompany happiness. Success in life is more about knowing that you are walking in the purposes of God, than anything else. That’s where we are to find real and lasting joy.

Finally, Paul the apostle said he was delivered from the “mouth of the lion” (Satan) when he stood defending the faith before Caesar. He then said he knew the Lord would deliver him from every evil attack, in spite of noting in this same passage his imminent martyrdom for the faith (2 Timothy 4:6-18). How could Paul, in the same sentence, say that both God would deliver him from every evil attack (verse 18) and yet also that his life would soon be taken (verse 6)? Because he knew that all of the evil satanic attacks against him were meant to stop him from obeying the Lord; it had nothing to do with happiness or living a long, comfort-filled life without conflict or pain. It was knowing that he was in the centre of God’s will.

May God deliver us from the false notion that gets us to believe, that happiness and joy are the same thing.

Winds of Change! Print E-mail

In the hour before the magnitude 9 Japanese Megaquake and the following Tsunami on Friday 11th March, I felt a strong stirring within, to stop what I was doing in order to pen this word.

The winds of change are indeed upon us in the nations. Recent events across the globe lay testimony to this fact. Change occurring in ways almost unprecedented in their intensity, timing and scope. Governmental shifts, cultural shifts, economic shifts, meteorological and geological shifts: wars and civil unrest. In these times God’s children must know how to discern the times and seasons they are in; be able to see and hear God from within these shifts, to be prepared for them and to speak out of God’s revealed nature to all who will listen.

Jesus said that His followers are to be readers of times and seasons. He also told us that such things must happen first before His return (Luke 21: 9); also, “when these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21:28) This call to stand and look up, is not just about increasing our hope concerning the expectation of Christ’s return, it is a biblical principle that is to carry us through seriously trying and difficult situations; to be His transforming influence. Remember this, the future does not belong to evil, darkness, war, murder and corruption. Yes they will happen and continue to happen, but Jesus said, “…when you see such things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.” All things may pass away, but His words will never pass away, and His kingdom is forever. (Luke 21:31-32) What is God saying to you? Regardless of how small or large it maybe, in these times, we are reminded to obey – to submit, that is to trust His known nature and character, and to yield to His word of revelation to us.

According to Paul in Romans 8:19-21, there is a cry in creation – a creational cry because of the fall. Recent events across the globe tell me that we are hearing the echo of that cry coming from creation to be freed from its bondage to sin, decay and frustration. Together with creation, there is a real cry for freedom being herald by men and women right now across all cultures and nations. This change is not about revolution or rebellion. This change has more to do with the change of the Holy Spirit as witnessed in the book of Acts – it’s about a new order of submission and a radical obedience to the person and work of the Holy Spirit. Will we, as Peter exhorts, humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand in the midst of these challenging and unsettling times. Will we cast ourselves unreservedly upon Him allowing God to advance us, as we stay alert for the enemy’s prowling activity? (1 Pet. 5:6-8) God is pursuing us to choose humility, simplicity, honouring one another, His glory and authenticity. The Holy Spirit seeks for a fresh release of His presence and power in and through the church of Jesus Christ worldwide. For it to be the salt – influence, leaven - impact and light - illumination within society, drawing men and women from every tribe, tongue and nation, to be ready for the returning bridegroom.

God is romancing His church, the Bride of Christ, to engage more fully with its first love, Jesus… the heavenly bridegroom. There are things in the church He likes and things that He doesn’t like, and in those He dislikes, He will bring dramatic change. This may result in some wrestling with Him in order for Him to assume full control. If resistance is prolonged, He's going to remove those who resist Him. In some situations He will remove permanently through death, those who become intransigent; however removal will happen if resistance persists.

We are going to witness in many nations the power of God coming back to the church in a manner that is not unlike the days of Wesley, Edwards and Finney and in recent times as witnessed in parts of South America, China and Africa. God’s refreshing Spirit is upon us, even in the midst of such traumatic and unprecedented global phenomenon; His Spirit is safe. Safe to abandon ones self to and safe to engaged with in seeing His authority and wisdom shape peoples worlds shattered by recent events. God’s wind of change will not harm those who are prepared to throw off the weight of conformity, the spirit of rejection or the spirit of unbelief; to let the Spirit have full sway in their life, work and worship relationships. It will flow, it is powerful and it is so wonderful that to resist it would be to deny your birthright as a child of God.

We, especially in the West, need to prepare. The church in the two-thirds world are more there than we are, and they are waiting – yes longing for this freedom to sweep through their nations, even in the midst of crisis, upheaval and change. God will use them like a forerunner in much of what He seeks to do through His church in the earth: look and be amazed and witness how He will orchestrate the movement of His Spirit in these nations. They will risk everything to see this change; however, we in the West are underprepared, and our focus has been on things that consume us - our existence; comfort, conformity, reputation and the cares of this world have stolen much from His church. Friends, prepare your hearts for change; prepare your minds for change, gird up your loins and be ready to move with this fresh wind. Prepare now for this change that the Spirit of God is birthing in the nations and across His church worldwide. In short, we need to depend upon the living God as never before.

This wind of the Spirit is already bringing change at the highest level or national government and power structures in the nations; more is yet to come. Great change! He will also require change at different levels within the church and across sections of Christian leadership, especially in the West and those nations where church leadership have fallen prey to self interested ideals.

pic_3

He seeks to release a fresh anointing – a special grace of humility, compassion and the miraculous, that will see arise a new standard of kingdom authority, an authority that will have the power to silence the enemy at the gates of cities and territories, even nations. He will accomplish it – it has already started in some of the most difficult nations where the church has been systematically persecuted, He’s answering their cry for real freedom. It will be powerful; it will be magnificent; it will be wonderful and it will have the capacity to draw many to Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

As I started off saying, it will be similar to the out-powering in the book of Acts. However like it, this wind of change in the nations and the church will not be without controversy, nor without problems, but the peace, presence and power of God’s Spirit will be event, and the anointing of God’s love will be almost tangible. That will be the witness in the streets. We have yet to see the extent to these winds of change, as they contain things that are yet hidden, hidden from the enemy’s sight as well as mankind’s… yet to be released, however, great and powerful things are in these winds of change… that are blowing. To be able to pull back the curtain to take a sneak-peek at what is coming; change that will see both crisis and opportunity sit side-by-side together for all who have the kingdom eyes to see; to rise up and take their position of authority and calling within this change, is not ours to view, but ours to be involved in. We are to be prepared and ready to sacrificially obey the call.

For truly it is upon us yet still a ways off… but it will surely come as it is coming now, because God has heard the cry of the people… the oppressed, persecuted, marginalized and the poor: He’s heard the cry of those who have been hurt, misunderstood or forgotten by authority, the system and broken promises of others. He’s heard the prayers of faithful intercessors, and He has set His heart to step down and answer the cry of the hearts of those both inside and outside the church. His Son died for this generation! He will not see them lost nor without a heavenly guide… He will be that guide! This wind will change things; it will destroy and it will uncover, yet it will reveal and cause to rise-up a new move of His power and spiritual authority across the globe; for His glory to be seen and His presence felt in the earth. His peace will be His abiding presence in the hearts of men and women.

In the midst of such momentous change globally, I believe that we, the Christian church, are at a point of great opportunity and enormous potential. In this respect, we are in a season not so unlike the 1st century Gal 4:4 setting: Paul explains that, “when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son….” A fresh release of spiritual ‘son-ship’ is upon the earth. Mark this time!

Due to the change happening worldwide, the time was right, the opportunity was great and the 1st century Christians responded to the challenge to win their generation to Christ and to see the church of Jesus Christ explode. In this changing season, we need to be like those 1st century believers, humbling ourselves before God’s mighty hand. To trust and yield to this fresh spiritual wind by seizing the opportunity and winning our generation, and praying… ‘His kingdom come His will be done in the earth.’

We must flow with this change; we must be exposed to this fresh wind of God’s Spirit that is blowing across the globe… to change, be changed or moved aside.

Is it taking shape – this highway of holiness? Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 February 2011 16:40

Seeking to build a Biblical viewpoint, rather than one built just around cultural, social or political commentary, let me share some insights that may help you pray more effectively for North Africa.

These past 5 years, our National Prayer Networks international efforts have been focused primarily in North Africa. Why is this? In 2005 the Holy Spirit directed our attention on this region and its peoples, because – now was His time for this region to see change, ‘to open the ancient doors and rebuild a highway of righteousness from Gibraltar to Jerusalem’. This sovereign call came with the Biblical injunction of Isaiah 62:10, and Chapter 19:23-25. In my 20 years involvement with strategic intercession globally, God has confirmed to us in the natural what He is seeking to do in the spiritual; this is not unusual nor is it inconsistent with scriptures like Romans 1:20… Where since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen. Being understood from what has been made…(NIV). God confirmed His word through the headline in a magazine that read, ‘The World’s Largest Highway Project….’ Guess where? It was being built across North Africa (commenced in 2007), with a feasibility study underway on a tunnel through the Straits of Gibraltar. This gave us the sign in the earth realm that things had definitely entered a new phase in the heavenlies across North Africa.

north_africa_mapSince 2005 strategic prayer teams have entered into these nations, serving God’s kingdom agenda in opening up the region to God’s transforming power and saving grace. Even though we have walked among some of the world’s most ancient stones, we were more captivated by God’s ‘living stones’ and their witness for Jesus in extreme and dangerous circumstances. From the research and prayer that our teams have carried out, I get a sense that the recent people’s revolution in Tunisia has become a ‘Tipping Point’ in the Arab world, especially the region of North Africa.

The speed and scope of recent events in Tunisia, Egypt and now Libya have caught many by surprise. Some media commentators are drawing parallels with the fall of Communism and the ‘Iron Curtain’ in the 1980s, where one nation after another broke free of its grasp. One news report said, “All hell seems to have suddenly broken lose. Or heaven. Who knows? It's as though a big hand came from somewhere and is stirring things up with a cosmic spoon.” Others note the role of modern communications and have dubbed it the ‘Facebook Uprising’. As a friend of mine recently said, “The current events in North Africa and the Middle East have the potential to bring us to one of the greatest mission opportunities in the history of the Church.” An obvious prayer for the fledgling Church there is that the newfound freedoms will not open the door to Islamist governments. One of the leaders in the church in Tunisia urges us to pray, “That as the church, we will be bolder in what we do and continue to press for more religious freedom.”

Different views, opinions and affiliations are being expressed from within Egypt, and other North African nations, even within the Christian community. Of course all are wary of the Islamic extremists, especially the Muslim Brotherhood, exploiting the chaos and rising to power through the support of ‘moderates.’ The common folk on the ground want stability, dialogue, and change without their nation falling into anarchy, but they won’t any longer accept the repressive non-democratic regimes of the past, because of fearing the alternative may be worse. I agree with the sentiments of one Egyptian Church leader who said, “We need supernatural wisdom on how to handle this open door that God has given us. What we see happening is a reflection of what is happening in the heavenlies – all-out spiritual war for the souls of men and women.”

As Christians make up between 10-15% of the population in Egypt, they need to be invited to participate in the talks between the current government and other opposition groups. I invite you to intercede for God’s appointed leaders to emerge: men of goodwill, integrity and a commitment to human dignity, freedom and justice: that through it all, God’s destiny for Egyptians would breakthrough. As one senior pastor in Egypt said, “The church and the saints in Egypt, for many generations now, have been praying for blessings for our nation. We are asking our living God who sees and hears all to come and save. We’re asking for a new era of freedom and dignity. We are asking for a new system where leaders with integrity and fear of God would tend to the needs and the aspirations of Egyptians.”

Now, for those of us who have been interceding for the people of North Africa and the Muslim World in general, we need to keep our focus on God and His love for the people who live in these nations; He loves them with a passion and wants only the best for them and their future. So, whichever way the affairs of men take in North Africa and the Middle East, it is certain that increasing spiritual hunger will be running neck and neck with the spreading rage and demands for political freedom and change. Therefore, however the ‘ancient doors’ swing open, the Church of Jesus Christ must to be ready to seize the day and walk through them.

Now all this is happening thousands of kilometers away from the safety of our shores, so where does it leave us as the Church in Australia and the West in general? Something monumental is happening: something historic. How do we as concerned Christians respond? Is God clearly answering the prayers of the saints - unseating principalities, tearing down strongholds? Are we witnessing a shift that will usher in Isaiah’s prophetic word in chapter 19:23-25 concerning a ‘righteous highway’ that God seeks to build between the family of Isaac and the family of Ishmael? Is His answer to bless, through this Isaiah companionship all the families of the earth beginning to take shape?

Isaiah 19:23-25 (NASB)

In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrians will come into Egypt and the Egyptians into Assyria, and the Egyptians will worship with the Assyrians. In that day Israel will be the third party with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth, whom the Lord of hosts has blessed, saying, "Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance."

As we commenced to work in harmony with God’s prophetic agenda for this region, this state of ‘blessedness’ – this end-time companionship of Isaiah 19, became a mind-blowing revelation to me. That God, in His infinite wisdom, had chosen as part of His divine purpose to bless all peoples…the entire earth, through the coming together of the family of Isaac and the family of Ishmael. That is His strategy for them to be joined together by a special highway: a highway of holiness (Isaiah 35:8). This tri-national (Egypt, Assyria and Israel) end-time prophecy spoken of by Isaiah is yet to be fulfilled. It may yet come as a result of more upheaval, internal division and conflict or through all-out war. Verses 16, 17 and 22 of the same chapter says, that the Lord’s hand will be raised against Egypt, He will strike her, but for a time, and they will respond to Him and then He we will heal her…knowledge and worship will flow freely into the heart of Egypt and beyond its borders. Now, whatever way this is ushered in, we can be assured, ‘there will an altar set up in the heart of Egypt…(v19) and this will be a place where the ‘Isaiah companionship’ gathers together in worship.

With the current turmoil and tensions occurring across North Africa and the Middle East, including the longtime tensions between Jews, Arabs and Christians, it is vitally important that as believers in Christ, we keep our focus on heaven’s agenda, and God’s prophetic purpose – to bless all of Abraham’s seed. My friend James Goll (author of The Prophetic Intercessor and Praying for Israel’s Destiny) comments on the Isaiah 19 prophecy in a recent article, “God is the supreme multi-tasker. He can accomplish more than one thing at a time! Biblical prophecy indicates that alongside God's gathering of the outcasts of Israel to their homeland, He is setting the stage to do a great work among all the descendants of Abraham.”

A key to seeing this ‘Isaiah companionship’ become a reality is the nation of Egypt. It is crucial that we understand the strategic role of Egypt, including the role of the Coptic (Orthodox) Church, the Evangelical church and other Christian organizations. Into this mix we need to add the changing face of Islam that is emerging across the region, where now we are seeing a large number of Muslims turning to Christ. Late last year whilst visiting one of these nations, I was informed by those who are working within this grassroots network, that the current estimate was somewhere between 1.5 to 2 million. Leaders in and beyond Egypt agreed, “that Egypt is a very important country in the whole of the Middle East, for whatever happens in Egypt affects the rest of the Muslim World.” The events in Egypt cannot be discussed in any other context. From a Kingdom of God perspective, Egypt is one of the most strategic nations in the world. Unless we understand the spiritual connotations of what is happening, and the strategic implications, we will completely miss the point.

Consider the following: approximately 47% of all Christians in the Arab World live in Egypt. Now unlike Western believers, Egyptians have a free reign to visit any Islamic nation. God has kept alive through centuries of hardship, trial and persecution, the seed of the Gospel in the heart of this nation for ‘such a time as this’. It is not beyond reason to believe that an Esther anointing is now falling on the Church of Egypt (Esther 4:14). History shows us that the Church seems to come alive in the midst of crisis – may we witness this even more so now. Indeed, North Africa and the Middle East have the potential to usher in one of greatest mission opportunities the Church has ever witnessed. Over recent times there have been unprecedented conversions to Christ in the Arab world. As I travel and meet local believers in these regions, I increasingly hear testimonies of local Muslims who are coming to Christ through personal contact with loving followers of Jesus, answers to prayer, supernatural healings and encounters with Christ. Do we dare to imagine our Father God inspiring an indigenous missions movement amongst His Church in Egypt and North Africa? Let’s pray for such a wave of saving grace and power.

Is the recent turmoil in North Africa and in other Arab nations in response to the decades of focused intercession? One cannot be definitive, but we do know that our Australian prayer teams received clear prophetic words for this region to sharpen and inform our intercession. For example, in the lead up to our 2009 Tunisia prayer journey, we received a word that this tiny nation of Tunisia was the “thin end of the wedge” in North Africa. This English idiom is used for something small and seemingly insignificant that will lead to something much bigger. Remember that God does nothing that He does not first reveal to His prophets (Amos 3:7). During our 2008 Egyptian prayer assignment God revealed that He was about to visit Egypt in the context of a storm; this storm would be the beginning of a new season and that He was in the storm. In 2010 while on the ground in Libya, God reminded us again that it was important to separate the people from the system. That God’s heart of mercy was towards the people, but His judgment was against the system. That in this nation there was a wind coming to expose and renew what He was doing.  Another interesting aspect to this word concerned the kind of church that would finally emerge, a new form of Christianity away from the excesses of Western Christianity. Therefore we can be certain that God is in the midst of things that are unfolding right now. That He is sovereign and that all history, including what is happening in Egypt and across North Africa is under the direct control of a sovereign, omnipotent and Holy God.

As the Church we need to pray for those who are angry, frustrated and fed-up with such things as: abuse, unemployment, corruption, autocracy, the absence of human rights and basic human freedoms, that they would encounter Christ through an emboldened Spirit-led church. Pray for political and religious freedom to be enshrined in the Tunisian and Egyptian constitutions. For real reforms to come to Libya’s system of government and true freedom for it’s people. It’s time! Time for genuine spiritual and societal transformation to take place: now is our time to stand with our brothers and sisters. On the ground this is an incredibly unstable situation yet our confidence and hope is not in the politics of the moment nor worldly systems. We have the certainty of God’s word that, …through the church the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms according to His eternal purpose (Ephesians 3:10 NIV).

I agree with my friend, Mike Burnard when he said, “We cannot deny that we are called into a spiritual battle. We cannot deny that the battle is intensifying and that North Africa and the Muslim World are on the frontline of this battlefield. We cannot deny that the situation in Egypt is directly related to the battle for the hearts and minds of people. However we can try to deny, like in the days of Noah, that this will have no effect on us who live in the West.” To do that would be foolhardy and unconscionable. Let us not forget that the church was born in the midst of a national struggle. It was designed to be a light in the darkness to lead the way to mercy, justice and eternal freedom.

Let us join our hearts and prayers with our brothers and sisters in Egypt and North Africa. Together with the assistance of the angelic hosts of heaven, let us see His church stand like Esther did, for ‘such a time as this’.
