Defining Vocation?

The letter V in V4Life stands for VOCATIONS. One might well ask at this point: what is a vocation? Firstly, a vocation is not just the job you do; it is that, but it’s much more than that. Your vocation has to do with your life’s calling from God.
It has to do with the way in which you have been designed and commissioned by God to fulfill your life’s purpose. This will include many works – paid, unpaid, short-term, or long-term – that you do; but again your vocation is much larger than any and all of these works.
Your vocation is the purpose and the power that flows through all of your life and work to enable you to –
  • grow up and mature in God and thereby take your place as a son or daughter who is able to ‘rule over the works of God’s hands’ (Psalm 8).
  • contribute to and equip others, with a view to their achieving their own God-given purpose.
  • respond and answer what Paul in Romans 8 speaks of as the cry of creation; a creation that is, in fact, your eternal inheritance.
  • to shine the light of God through all of your good works so that people living in darkness will be able to respond to the goodness and rule of God in the heavens (Matthew 5:16).
